Today, Mark celebrates a remarkable milestone that emphasizes wellness, consistency, and the power of daily habits. He is joined by his mother, Andrea, who also practices acupuncture. Together, they share the story of a run streak that has lasted an astonishing six years and counting.
A Rediscovered Love for Running
Mark first fell in love with running in high school, where he participated in track and cross country. In the years following college, acupuncture school, and building a practice, regular exercise took a back seat.
Shortly before turning 40, he recalled the thrill he once felt while racing. A part time assistant at his clinic, a student athlete at Georgia Tech, frequently spoke about competitive running. This renewed Mark’s enthusiasm and led him to train for 5K races, eventually winning some events. Over time, however, the stress of frequent 4 a.m. runs and the pressure to improve signaled that a more balanced approach was necessary.
Embracing a One Mile a Day Streak
Instead of giving up running, Mark decided to commit to at least one mile every day. As of January 9, 2025, he has maintained this daily routine for six consecutive years. The run usually takes about ten minutes at an easy pace, yet it delivers significant benefits:
- Consistency over intensity
- Focusing on just one manageable mile helps reduce the risk of injury while keeping running enjoyable.
- A daily reset
Even with low motivation, Mark always feels better afterward, proving that the toughest part is often taking the first step.
- A healthier mindset: Releasing the need for competition and focusing on well being turns running into an act of self care rather than a performance challenge.
- Travel friendly exercise: Mark has run in multiple countries and time zones, finding that running is one of the best ways to explore a new place.
Movement as Medicine
In acupuncture, practitioners often discuss Qi, the body’s vital energy, which can become blocked. Regular movement, whether running, walking, dancing, or yoga, helps restore its flow. Andrea emphasizes that even brief walks can improve circulation, ease discomfort, and shift perspective by releasing endorphins. The mental uplift can be just as valuable as any physical gain.
Finding a Personal Path
Not everyone enjoys running. The most important factor is choosing an activity that fits individual preferences and doing it consistently. Consider asking:
• Which past hobbies once brought joy but were set aside
• What new activities spark interest now
• Are there beliefs or limitations that may be holding you back
• Could shorter, more frequent sessions feel more realistic than lengthy workouts
Looking Ahead
Mark hopes to continue his running streak, understanding that setbacks can happen. If a day ever arrives when the streak ends, he intends to start again rather than see it as a failure. By focusing on overall wellness, he maintains a meaningful exercise habit without undue pressure.
