Cupping therapy is a manual therapy that involves the placement of thick walled glass cups onto various areas of the body, generally the back. A vacuum is created using alcohol and a flame (known as “fire cups”) and the cups are left in place for several minutes. Cupping therapy is most often used for certain types of pain, as well as treatment of colds, flu, and asthma. About 50% of patients will be left with circular red marks that can last up to several days and are generally painless.
