Stimulants are the mainstay of treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents, and adults. The transition from pediatric care to adult care for patients who take medications such as Vyvanse, Adderall, Concerta, and other stimulants is challenging. Gaps in care can be a source of setbacks and frustration, often resulting in either time without, or even the discontinuation of, needed medication.
As a board certified pediatric oncologist and medical acupuncturist, Laura Bowman, MD has found that a holistic treatment plan consisting of conventional medication management in combination with monthly acupuncture appointments results in improved concentration, more regulated sleep, and enhanced overall quality of life for her patients. In addition to providing relief for ADHD-associated symptoms, this treatment method has also shown to be particularly beneficial in reducing the uncomfortable side-effects some patients experience as a result of their medication. This can often include headaches, insomnia, decreased appetite, and muscle tightness in the head, neck, and shoulders. By combining acupuncture treatments with monthly check-ups for prescription refills, Dr. Bowman’s patients are able to optimize the therapeutic ratio of their medication: they achieve the greatest benefit while minimizing or eliminating the unacceptable side-effects. During these appointments, Dr. Bowman is able to provide holistic care for individuals with ADHD by assessing the need for changes, prescribing medication refills, providing lifestyle and dietary counseling, and preventing or addressing intercurrent illnesses.
